At Girls and Boys of Character, we believe that character isn't just taught — it's lived, felt, and grown from the inside out.
Helping our mentees understand, express, and manage their emotions is essential not just for personal success, but it helps them become compassionate, resilient, and responsible individuals.
We’ve Seen It Work
One of our mentees who is known for his “George Jefferson’s tell it like it is” attitude, announced to us all that he had a wonderful day at school! And that he received two awards!
I stopped what we were discussing because I was excited to hear what award he received.
Now I must share some backstory about him. He is very direct. You know one of those children that exemplify the statement, “Don’t’ ask a kid if you don’t want to know the truth.”
His picture would be perfect as a meme for it. He’s very matter of fact. There is rarely a time that you can see any emotion from him.
He’s a hard shell to crack I can only recall one time, yes, one time when he has expressed any emotion.
His Awards
The first award he received as for reading 52 units! The most he has ever read. Well, this is not much of a surprise for us because he is an avid reader.
But this next award! It took everyone for a shock!
He received The Compassion Award!
When he announced it, everyone immediately clapped for him and began to congratulate him!
It’s definitely one of those IYKYK moments!
Even when he shared what the award was, there was little emotion.
I wanted to know details of how he received the award. He shared that there was a girl in his class that wasn’t having a good day and he spoke some encouraging words to her.
Definitely a IYKYK moment for him!
There’s More!
Not only did he received The Compassion Award, he was selected by his peers to receive the award!
I’m tickled as I imagine how their conversations were when they discussed why he should receive it.
Congratulations! We are proud of you!
