How Is Character Built?

Everything our child experiences, sees, or hears can influence and contribute to the building of their character.

Let’s begin to discover how character is built by what our children see.

As parents we are responsible for what we allow our children to see.

This includes what we allow them to see in our homes.

Also what we allow them to view on television and social media can contribute to the development of their character.

Have you ever noticed a change in your child’s behavior after they’ve watched a particular television show?

True story- One of my young cousins began to be more ‘bratty’ than normal.  She would stomp off after her parents told her she couldn’t have anymore snacks.

This kind of behavior increased and her voice began to sound much like the ‘bratty’ character; it became more high pitched.

During one of her ‘acts’, her older sister notices and said, “She’s beginning to act just like so-and- so from the tv show _____”.

The parents sat down to watch the show and agreed, their daughter was ‘literally’ taking on the character of the ‘bratty’ character. (No pun intended.)

The parents then addressed the issue by taking the time to sit and watch the television show with my little cousin, pointing out that her ‘bratty’ behavior was not acceptable.

They further explained to her that as her parents it was their responsibility to know what’s best for her including monitoring what kind of television shows she viewed and the number of snacks she should eat.

Let’s take a more proactive approach in the involvement of the development of our children’s character by monitoring the programs they view and their social media accounts.

This will prove to be beneficial in helping to develop ethically and morally strong adults.
