Hello again from Girls and Boys of Character
We have to share with you this enlightening statement the highlight of our discussion during today's session.
Once the children come in and settle down we begin what is called our 'Check In'. During this time the children share with us the course of their day.
We ask, "How was your day?"
They share with us, today, most of them shared that their day was "Good", and then they share why.
But what happened today rarely happens. Our newest child, asked Mrs. Stephanie and myself, "How was your day?"
I said I was amazed that he asked the question. Mrs. Stephanie shared she was amazed as well but not surprised, "Because we have brilliance in the room."
I shared my day and asked if any of them had an experience of working in a group setting and they didn't get the credit they deserved or was looked over or short changed.
They all shared that they had and shared their personal experiences.
Our newest child shared his experience. He spoke about how he created the documents needed on Canva, and prepared for the presentation.
(The fact that he could use Canva blew me away!)
The Clincher
When he begins to share the experience he starts off with, "I went first, because I'm a leader."
We listened to and we don't judge... and we learned this today:
The boldness of his statement ignited my belief that our young men can speak well!
The candid way he made his statement left no doubt in our minds, that yes, he was in fact a leader. (Makes me want to put some respect on the word leader by using a capital L!)
I was reminded that we at GBOC have created a safe space for children to speak about the value that they possess.
We at GBOC have created an environment that children can share their experiences without fear of being 'judged'.
Oh yeah, we learned something today!
This is his first week at GBOC and he's off to a great start!
Listen, I felt it in my core when he said, "I went first, because I'm a leader".
Some may call it bragging. Some may call it boasting. But I'm going to call it a great lesson!
We listen and we don't judge...and we learn!
