One of the most gratifying moments during our Girls and Boys of Character sessions is when the children openly discuss their day.
During this time, they share what they have learned in class and freely talk about their challenges or struggles—whether with the lesson itself or with their classmates.
We pause to thank them for being brave enough to share something personal, and we make it clear that this is a judgment-free space. We celebrate them when they’ve handled challenges with kindness, patience, or understanding.
At other times, we dig a little deeper and ask whether the situation could have been handled differently, helping them reflect and grow.
Most importantly, we always remind them of their value within the community and in spaces outside of the classroom. We encourage them to use their voices, practice empathy, and carry these character-building skills with them wherever they go.
This has proven to be a way that has increased their communication and problem solving skills, while providing a safe space to do so.
When was the last time you asked someone about their day? Were they allowed to share with you without fear of being judged or condemned?
Let’s remember that we all are in need of safe spaces.
