As we step into a new year, we pause to honor and reflect on all that 2025 brought us—a year filled with growth, meaningful connections, and powerful learning experiences.

Throughout 2025, we expanded learning and enrichment opportunities for our students by implementing cursive writing lessons, Black History education, vocabulary development, character building, and career research. Each initiative was intentionally designed to strengthen not only academic achievement but also personal development, confidence, and self-awareness.

One of our proudest accomplishments was the premiere of our documentary, “We Will Not Be Silent.” This powerful project opened the door for meaningful conversations surrounding emotions and Black history, giving students a platform to express themselves and engage deeply with important topics. We also developed a strong reading partnership with the Waukegan Public Library and collaborated with the Northern Illinois Recovery Community Organization (NIRCO), further expanding the support and resources available to our community.

Our fundraising efforts reflected creativity, collaboration, and community spirit. Hat-Ti-Tude created a welcoming space where women could decorate hats with their own unique flair while connecting with one another. Shoe Talk invited women to share the stories behind their favorite pairs of shoes and donate additional pairs for sale. Together, these efforts helped fund our unforgettable educational trip to the African American Museum in Washington, DC.

Students also enjoyed enriching field trips that blended education with joy. Experiences such as live theater and films like Finding Nemo and Paddington in Peru, along with trips to the movies, allowed students to explore storytelling, creativity, and shared experiences outside the classroom.

Perhaps the most memorable moment for me was our trip to the African American Museum in Washington, DC. Watching the children reflect on the Black history lessons we had learned throughout the year—and then connect those lessons to the exhibits they saw—was truly amazing. Equally impactful was witnessing our community come together to help fund the trip. Their support reaffirmed that the work we do at Girls and Boys of Character is valued and appreciated.

For Mrs. Norma, I'll guess it would be her first book reveal to the children at the Waukegan Public Library.  Her book was hidden on the shelves and the children were given small clues as to what book to search for.  Imagine their surprise when it was found and they read the author's name!  The children now know a personal author and realize that goals can be met.

As we welcome 2026, we do so with gratitude, pride, and excitement. We are ready to build upon the strong foundation laid in 2025 and continue growing, learning, and serving our community together.

And thank you for your continued interest in Girls and Boys of Character. We appreciate you.
