School Is In Session
Now that school has started we at GBOC have changed up our sessions.
After our Check In Session, the children begin to work on their homework assignments.
Me, personally, I love homework! Some of the children, well, maybe not so much.
And we intend to change that.
Oh You Don't Have Any Homework?
I recall reading a FB post recently, and the person stated that some children do not receive homework. There was a great concern about children having homework from the responses. I tend to be in this group.
Because, I believe having homework has benefits.
1. It strengthens what was taught during the class.
2. It builds consistency in learning.
3. Completing homework creates a good habit.
4. Because what else are you doing to be doing with that time?
It Just So Happens
It just so happens that one of our attendees does not receive homework. But...
In order to create consistency in the program, we take the liberty of using another child's weekly Spelling Word assignment for her.
We have shared with the children that knowledge builds confidence. The larger your vocabulary is the better able you are to participate in and contribute to conversations.
(We learned from conversations that some of the children didn't like communicating because they didn't have the confidence to do so.). Yeah, we did some ear hustling.
We use index cards for the children to write the spelling words on, and will also write the definition.
Mrs. Stephanie creatively incorporated 'Spelling Bee' time. All spelling words from each children are used in this activity. The children can decide if they want to be challenged with the words of their peer's spelling words.
My Observation
While observing one of the children write her spelling words on the index cards, I noticed how carefully she counted the lines on the index card before writing the first letter.
She carefully writes the words neatly on each card on its appropriate line with detail precision.
